Punjabi Bread Pakora is a popular street food snack in Punjab, India. It is made by stuffing bread slices with a spicy potato filling, dipping them in a gram flour (besan) batter, and deep-frying until golden and crispy. Here's a recipe for Punjabi Bread Pakora:
Ingredients:
- 8 slices of bread
- 2 large potatoes, boiled and mashed
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 2 green chilies, finely chopped
- 1 teaspoon ginger-garlic paste
- 1/2 teaspoon cumin seeds
- 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
- 1/2 teaspoon red chili powder
- 1/2 teaspoon garam masala
- Salt to taste
- Oil for deep frying
For the batter:
- 1 cup gram flour (besan)
- 1/4 cup rice flour
- 1/2 teaspoon red chili powder
- A pinch of asafoetida (hing)
- Salt to taste
- Water as needed
Instructions:
1. In a mixing bowl, combine the mashed potatoes, chopped onion, green chilies, ginger-garlic paste, cumin seeds, turmeric powder, red chili powder, garam masala, and salt. Mix everything well to make the stuffing.
2. Take two bread slices and trim off the crusts. Place a generous amount of the potato stuffing on one bread slice and cover it with another slice. Press gently to seal the edges. Repeat this process for all the bread slices.
3. Heat oil in a deep frying pan or kadhai over medium heat.
4. Meanwhile, prepare the batter. In a separate bowl, mix gram flour, rice flour, red chili powder, asafoetida, and salt. Gradually add water and whisk until you get a smooth, lump-free batter of medium consistency.
5. Dip each stuffed bread sandwich into the prepared batter, ensuring it is coated evenly from all sides.
6. Carefully place the coated bread pakoras into the hot oil. Fry them on medium heat until they turn golden brown and crispy on both sides.
7. Remove the pakoras from the oil and place them on a kitchen towel to absorb any excess oil.
8. Serve the Punjabi Bread Pakoras hot with mint chutney, tamarind chutney, or tomato ketchup.
