Moong dal appe, also known as Pesarattu or Paniyaram, is a popular South Indian snack made from moong dal (split green gram). It is a savory dish that is typically served for breakfast or as an evening snack. Here's a simple recipe to make moong dal appe:
Ingredients:
- 1 cup moong dal (split green gram)
- 2 tablespoons rice flour
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 2-3 green chilies, finely chopped
- 1-inch piece of ginger, grated
- A handful of fresh coriander leaves, chopped
- Salt to taste
- Oil for greasing the appe pan
Instructions:
1. Wash the moong dal thoroughly and soak it in water for about 4-5 hours or overnight.
2. Drain the soaked dal and transfer it to a blender or food processor. Grind it into a smooth batter by adding a little water as needed.
3. In a mixing bowl, take the moong dal batter. Add rice flour, chopped onions, green chilies, grated ginger, chopped coriander leaves, and salt. Mix well to combine all the ingredients.
4. Heat an appe pan or paniyaram pan on medium heat and add a few drops of oil into each cavity.
5. Pour spoonfuls of the batter into each cavity of the pan, filling them up to about three-fourths full.
6. Cook the appe on medium heat for a few minutes until the bottom side turns golden brown. Then, flip each appe using a spoon or skewer and cook the other side until it becomes golden brown as well.
7. Remove the cooked appe from the pan and repeat the process with the remaining batter.
8. Serve the moong dal appe hot with chutney or sambar of your choice.
